I was recently interviewed for a local magazine. The topic was how to get natural smiles from your children. This is something I work hard at each and everyday at my studio. Reflecting on our current photo culture, it is so very different from when I was a child.

When I had my picture taken as a child it was a very special event. My mom or dad loaded the camera with film and we only had 24 exposures to capture family moments. Much thought and preparation went in to setting up the “shot” and there was a silent prayer each time the shutter clicked that no one would blink and waste a frame. Precious and valued moments were made. These days we live in a very different “photo culture”. It seems everywhere you turn someone is taking a picture with a cell phone, camera or even an iPad! Our kids are constantly being asked to pose, smile or interact with a photo device. That can make getting natural expressions challenging.

At JDP we treat sessions more like play dates. Start by playing with your child and getting them to relax. Have the camera out, but don’t use it until after you feel your child is connecting with YOU. Being silly and encouraging creative expressions as opposed to “smiles” is a great way to start. If things get silly enough those sweet smiles will come naturally so have your camera ready. Working one on one is best, it can be overwhelming to have many people asking for your child’s attention.

Photographs are about connections people make with each other. Pictures are just a wonderful product of good memories. Enjoy some of our family memories captured on Kodak film that isn’t even produced anymore.

How long have I known Jon and Cathy? Well, let’s just say Kessler wasn’t here yet! Now look at him and his younger bro, Sawyer. Little super heros (Sawyer’s cape is invisible). They conquered the world while I visited, well at least Chateau St. Michelle’s Vineyards. LOVED seeing everyone in their element. We miss them here in Indianapolis, but Seattle suits them well. I loved staying with them. I had a lot of new experiences while in Seattle (including eating a bee), but the best part was story time at night with Kess and Sawyer. Miss my munchkins being this small! Thanks for your hospitality Jon and Cathy! wilkerson

When Lindsay and Brad invited me to Seattle to photograph them I was so honored! They didn’t have a traditional wedding so don’t really have many pictures of their relationship. Their love is quiet, deep and simple. I REALLY enjoyed my time with them and we must have hiked 3 or 4 miles to get to the beach. It was worth it. I left Seattle inspired and with my cup a little fuller than when I arrived. Thanks Brad and Lindsay for having me! I look forward to our next conversation:)mayorasbl

Congrats Lindsay & Brad! Jealous my friend Jennifer got to go to Seattle. Is that Bainbridge Island? Still one of the best trips we’ve ever taken.

You would think after 19 years of knowing each other my husband and I might slip into being ordinary and predictable.  While it is true that sometimes we find ourselves very comfortable after all these years he still takes the time to show me how much he loves me.  We have our days of challenging one another and redefining our relationship as we both grow into another stage of life and that is GOOD.  The other day we were sitting at Cafe Patachou and a couple who must have collectively had 160 birthdays between the two of them walked in and I smiled watching her sort through the paper and hand her husband the sports section while she perused another of interest to her.  His hearing was obviously not what it used to be, but neither was her eyesight as she strained to read her section.  The soft touch of their hands with emotion unspoken was probably more than it had ever been.  I can only hope that John continues to see me in soft focus against the world and treasure the hard work and determination we both put into our marriage.  It isn’t our anniversary, I know, but all this mush is because we have had many weekends together lately.  Our daughter and photographer extraordinaire, Annie, took this picture of us.  I am settled and content with my marriage and life and now I can’t wait to capture many wonderful beginnings for some amazing couples this wedding season.  Thank you, John, for being there.  The rest of our lives just isn’t long enough.john

Being a Navy Brat I absolutely LOVE to travel! Since marrying and settling down here in the great state of Indiana I now have a more permanent “homestead”. One of the things I love about my job is that I get just enough travel to make life interesting. I leave tomorrow for Vegas to shoot a wedding for two very special people and seeing as how our Colts didn’t bring home the bacon I want to move that post on down the line (sounding very southern here…did live in NC for quite a while). Not too long ago my parents gave me the gift of all the slides from my childhood. My father is quite a fantastic photographer as well as a surgeon and our travels were well-documented. We lived in the Philippines for the first six year of my life. I graduated from Kindergarten there! I have many memories and looking at these images I thought I would share. I don’t often put up personal pictures, but this year I might do a little more of that. Memories are after all what I love to capture–and that includes my own family. Mom and Dad, I’m so glad we found each other. I couldn’t have asked for a richer life.

I like for images to be honest and true so I did not manipulate any of these images. These came right out of my father’s pentax camera, which he used to use for capturing before and after pictures of surgery as well as whatever art he chose to create with landscapes and family. I know some are blurry, but I love my mother’s smile. Funny, now that I am married I can appreciate the smiles and moments between my parents. I hope our kids will look back on our adventures and feel the same sense of pride I feel for my parents and their dedication to working at marriage and appreciating each other.

It was an amazing week in the Grand Cayman.  I was thrilled to spend time with some of my favorite people in the industry.  Here are a few images from this amazing adventure.  If any of you have the budget to fly out to Manhattan and select a dress from Kleinfeld’s let me know.  Randy Fenoli will open the store after hours and personally help fit you.  Randy was so much fun!  He has inspired me to trash everything in my closet and start paying more attention to my wardrobe.  I really need help!  If I were a bride again and had the means I would be on a flight to NY first thing!  Randy doesn’t care about “selling” a dress.  He loves helping women feel beautiful and selecting the right dress for them no matter what size they are.  He really impressed me and as you might guess he was dressed impeccably at all times.  Michael Landry of Gucci was present as well.  I really should have gone shopping before heading out to Grand Cayman:) Grand Cayman would make an idea spot for a honeymoon.  Talk to me about our experience, it was wonderful.img_3503-copy

Or maybe it is our first.  We have been married for 16+ years and never really did get a “honeymoon”.  So I have a little “work” to do in the Cayman Islands and decided to drag John with me.  We landed earlier today and it is HEAVEN here.  I am very excited about:

Thayer Allyson Gowdy - {Thayer Photo}
Joanne Brown – {Celebrations LTD}
Simon T. Bailey -{“Release Your Brilliance”}
Rebecca Grinnals & Kathryn Arce– {Engaging Concepts}

So as we got off the plane John wrestled with the many bags I packed and we headed up to the room after registering.  With engage 09 we are pampered from head to toe and I was given a beautiful gift bag packed with goodies.  I was going through this as the bell boy was bringing up the bags and as I got deeper in the bag John started acting weird insisting I come and watch for the bell boy.  As the bags were brought in he told the man, “Be careful with the bag, the kids are in there.”.  Haha, my husband is quick witted and always has one ready.  I thought this was weird behavior and went right back to unloading the goodies and then there was a Reis Nichols box in there with this amazing diamond ring I had been looking at…it took me a minute to figure it out, but once I did-wow!  So here we are now on our honeymoon and I finally have a ring I LOVE.  I’ll post a picture soon.  Now it is off to enjoy time with my friends who happen to be some of the top wedding professionals in the world.

Have a great week!

Jennifer

Hey Alice! I’ll post a picture of it soon. I used my “real” camera to shoot it and that requires a bit of editing so as soon as I am done para-sailing:)))) We are doing that today. I love this vacation!
