Happy Mother’s day to all you moms out there. Your unconditional love and encouragement makes the world go round. We celebrate life each and everyday at JDP and without you that wouldn’t be possible. Below are some of my favorite moments with moms in and out of the studio. We would also like to recognize some moms who are now watching over their family from heaven. You are dearly missed and never forgotten!

It’s so very fun to have a new baby in the family to photograph! Jack visits the studio quite often and has established his role as model for JDP. He has renewed my joy for photographing children and I love him so much! He is so beautiful and all his little quirky ways make me smile. I will surely be sharing many more images to come! Most recent image is Jack expressing his italian roots by cooking a pizza. A sample of our baby parts canvas design! Now enjoy a slideshow of moments from birth to 6 months of age!

I had the honor of working with Mary and Shawn this past January. I knew from the moment I met Mary I was going to LOVE her, but when I saw her with Shawn I liked her even more. They are two of the happiest people I’ve ever met. So very in love and so very true to themselves and each other. Mary is the type of woman that appreciates the little things and doesn’t stress at all over big things. Mary and Shawn have their priorities set for family first and I love that about them. Shawn is ever the Texas gentleman!! What a dreamy couple they are together. Everything about this wedding was so thoughtful. It was planned by the talented David Jackson of Premiere Events so all of the details were perfection.

Event Coordinator and Designer: David Jackson
Salon: The amazing DL Lowry
Florist: Heather with Enflora

It’s always fun to be part of a rehearsal! Mary and Shawn had so many friends and family attend their rehearsal it was like a mini wedding. The thoughtful menu and decor planned by Shawn’s mom expressed his Brazilian heritage.

I’ve known Liz and Matt long before their wedding. Liz is super fun and Matt is too. Their wedding day was full of laughs and smiles and I can tell Madison has only made it triple the smiles and laughs. Watching them as parents is going to be awesome. So good to see you two and I can’t wait for the next session!!

I was recently interviewed for a local magazine. The topic was how to get natural smiles from your children. This is something I work hard at each and everyday at my studio. Reflecting on our current photo culture, it is so very different from when I was a child.

When I had my picture taken as a child it was a very special event. My mom or dad loaded the camera with film and we only had 24 exposures to capture family moments. Much thought and preparation went in to setting up the “shot” and there was a silent prayer each time the shutter clicked that no one would blink and waste a frame. Precious and valued moments were made. These days we live in a very different “photo culture”. It seems everywhere you turn someone is taking a picture with a cell phone, camera or even an iPad! Our kids are constantly being asked to pose, smile or interact with a photo device. That can make getting natural expressions challenging.

At JDP we treat sessions more like play dates. Start by playing with your child and getting them to relax. Have the camera out, but don’t use it until after you feel your child is connecting with YOU. Being silly and encouraging creative expressions as opposed to “smiles” is a great way to start. If things get silly enough those sweet smiles will come naturally so have your camera ready. Working one on one is best, it can be overwhelming to have many people asking for your child’s attention.

Photographs are about connections people make with each other. Pictures are just a wonderful product of good memories. Enjoy some of our family memories captured on Kodak film that isn’t even produced anymore.
